David Yurman jewelry

By Marek Kamella

In these days of economic uncertainty you may be surprised to learn that the sale of luxury brands is still very buoyant and one such brand is David Yurman jewelry.

David Yurman jewelry is one of the best selling jewelry lines in the United States of America but also is beginning to increase it's profile overseas too.

Thus far they have no presence in the UK but they are present in France, Russia and many of the Caribbean islands near the U.S. mainland.

The brand has an excellent reputation for quality and design and the company produce very arty and stylish TV commercials a few times a year shot in grainy black and white with good looking models wearing the jewelry.

David Yurman himself turned seventy years of age in 2011 and his career has spanned around forty years in the jewelry business.

He started as a young teen selling pieces of artwork to his fellow school friends. As an aspiring artist the fact that his work was considered commercial enough that people would actually buy it must have been a huge source of encouragement for him.

Inspired by this he made the radical decision to quit college and try to carve a career for himself in the art world.

Moving to the bohemian environment of Greenwich Village in the early 1970's must have felt like paradise to an aspiring artist as the neighbourhood was awash with painters, beatniks, writers and singers all mingling together and exchanging ideas.

It was during this time that David met another young artist called Sybil. The couple hit it off immediately and fell in love with each other.

David would create small love tokens for Sybil to wear and one of these tokens caught the eye of a gallery owner one time. He was so takan aback by the design that he offered to place an order for fifty more pieces. Sybil and David had to explain that the piece (or the design) were not for sale as it was a item that was very personal to the both of them and they couldn't allow themselves to turn it into a commercial product.

Having said that, the fact that someone once again felt that David's work had commercial potential encouraged him to start to make a serious attempt at fulfilling his dream of being a commercial artist.

The couple moved out of Greenwich Village and formed their own business where they made small folk art objects and odd pieces of jewelry.

David had seen a photo of an ancient Celtic brooch which prompted him to try something similar. He created a sterling silver bracelet which consisted of silver strands braided together. This became known as the "cable bracelet" and it was this one piece of jewelry that was the main catalyst for the David Yurman brand we all know today.
